Orange Shirt Day
At Kelvin Elementary, we used September 29 as our Orange Shirt Day with there being no school on September 30 – the new Truth and Reconciliation Day. All that week, staff talked about the meaning of Orange Shirt Day and how it originated with Phyllis Webstad wearing an orange shirt to school on her first day. As well, teachers used stories and picture books as a way to teach truths that will lead to reconciliation.
Mr. Millard also read the story You Hold Me Up by indigenous author, Monique Gray Smith, to the whole school through our CLKS TV Show. This story shows what kindness looks like and how we can all show kindness in many ways.
